ISIS WideLine sound intriguing? What's the idea?

QSC's ISIS WideLine is a full-range, wide-angle line array loudspeaker system designed for use in ballrooms, theaters, nightclubs, concert halls and houses of worship. It provides an open, natural sound and exceptional 140-degree horizontal coverage - the 140 degree horizontal dispersionwidest of any line array system currently available. And, as with all ISIS products, we place a strong emphasis on fast system set-up, accurate sound performance and cutting labor requirements.

Line Arrays versus conventional designs.

Line arrays, in essence, are a collection of cabinets laid out in a vertical line of as many as a dozen or more identical elements that work in unison to provide highly directional and controllable vertical coverage. When you consider how well a line array can cover an audience with fewer, smaller loudspeaker elements and without the complications of setting delay times and dealing with comb filtering problems, the advantages over conventional systems are readily apparent. Line arrays are more easily controllable, more consistent, provide more coverage and are more versatile in nearly every way.

In Stockholm, PA specialists DM Audio have been using ISIS WideLine arrays for a number of large outdoor concerts throughout the city, including Vitabergsparken, an open-air, arena-style theater. "WideLine opens up a new avenue of possibilities for venues like this," offers DM Audio's Lars Wern, "which typically can't accommodate a line array system."

Sounds like magic...

Not really; just good science. Line arrays take advantage of the properties of sound and the effects that occur when sound waves generated by multiple speaker elements interact with one another. A properly designed line array can deliver higher sound pressure levels over a greater distance to the far field coherently. Sound from multiple speaker locations arriving at slightly different times can create a 'smearing' effect on the audio. In contrast, line arrays deliver more intelligible, clean and clear audio to each audience member retaining all of the nuances of the performance.
Big Valley Grace Community Church
All of this sonic benefit from a loudspeaker system that is smaller and more unobtrusive than conventional speaker clusters may seem too good to be true, but when you consider the extensive engineering efforts and technical expertise that has gone into designing QSC's WideLine, it's no surprise that our line arrays represent the pinnacle of loudspeaker technology.

When Big Valley Grace Community Church wanted to bring more intimacy to its low-ceilinged sanctuary, it turned to Fresno, CA-based Michael Garrison Associates (MGA). "The church was definitely on the right track when it looked to a line array," says MGA's Brian Roggow. "The WideLines work amazingly well in this application, despite the room's low ceiling."

Rapid set-up and accurate sound performance.

Each WideLine enclosure is lightweight - only 70 pounds per element - fully captive hardware is featured for box-to-box attachment of up to 24 enclosures. (A smaller stacking grid mounts directly to the QSC 215PCM subwoofers.) Although both drivers handle low frequencies, only one handles the mids, thereby creating smoother pattern control near the MF crossover for improved intelligibility. A selectable frequency shading circuit lets you redirect mid-bass build up without EQ, while adjusting the cabinet’s LF coverage for house left or right, without the need to reorient the enclosures. The compact elements measure just 10.75 by 27.5 by 20.25 inches (HxWxD), and are weather resistant for outdoor use.

ATR/Treehouse, a Providence, RI-based sound company, appreciates such weight savings; according to General Manager Bill Murray, the WideLine systems the firm transports for over-night assignments now weigh half what they did. "That's a benefit you simply have to be grateful for, especially with the current cost of fuel," he considers.

Ultra-wide 140-degree horizontal coverage
lets you cover more area with less PA.

Yes, the ISIS WideLine's extremely wide horizontal coverage pattern reduces the need for front fills, outfills or center fills. Each WideLine element features dual 10-inch, long-throw LF drivers in a ported trapezoidal enclosure, plus a 3-inch neodymium compression driver that's mounted on a proprietary waveguide. QSC's patent-pending design produces the ideal linear source required for good line-array performance, which, with our multiple-aperture, diffraction slot waveguide, provides exceptionally wide, 140-degree dispersion. A Win-Win combination!

"When mixing REO or a corporate show, the WideLine rig gives me the tools I need. It has exceptional coverage and is a very capable and flexible box. Every time I fire the rig up it brings a smile to my face, and it sounds great everywhere.", remarks veteran sound engineer, Neil Schaefer
