A custom theatrical sound package built by Northern Sound & Light brought audio to a production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, wrapping on April 24 after a 13-week national run and one date in Canada. Powered by a potent assortment of PowerLight2 and PLX amplifiers from QSC, the show played before audiences in midsize venues ranging from 8002,500 seats.
Contracted for the tour by a Virginia-based producer representing an eclectic blend of mainstream theatrical properties performed on Broadway, off-Broadway, and in regional theaters, Northern Sound & Light designed, built, and tested the rig at its headquarters just outside of Pittsburgh.
"Our system goals focused upon providing the promoter with a package that was compact, lightweight, and capable of producing a tremendous amount of power for its size," says Northern Sound President Steve Raslevich. "The loudspeakers were custom-fabricated expressly for the tour using a tri-amp blueprint intended for groundstack usage. Simplicity, reliability, and speed of setup and teardown were also major factors taken into consideration by the design, given that the show was scheduled to march across the country at a swift pace."
Mounted in a single rolling rack, amplifiers included PL 218 and PL 236 offerings utilized for highs, mids, and subs, while PLX2402s managed stage monitors and frontfills for the house.
Having supplied audio for theatrical tours handled by the producer since 1995, Northern Sound & Light chose QSC for this task based upon a successful track record spanning the entire period of the 10-year working relationship.
"At this point, everyone is married to the QSC sound," Raslevich adds. "Combine that with the steadfast dependability of the amps and their lightweight design, and its easy to see why this bond has and will continue to hold fast. Outside of the world of theater, we have driven full-tilt, two-ohm loads on sunny, 95-degree summer days at rock shows, and these products refused to wilt. Before they were available and we had to use amps with conventional power supplies, sometimes we'd be pushing the envelope of the weight our trucks could handle just to make it to a show. Fortunately, thanks to QSC, those days have long since been banished to history's dust bin."
Performing flawlessly throughout the tour under the guidance of systems engineer Joseph Bree, the audio rig was returned to Northern Sound & Light shortly after the curtain closed on the last date. Examined and found to be in excellent condition, the QSC amps were placed into the company's inventory of used gear and sold. "Just to keep things fresh, we'll provide new amps for the next show," Raslevich says, obviously ready to pull the curtain up on the next act. "Putting together the pieces for these gigs is enjoyable, and profitable too. Thanks in no small part to QSC, we'll make sure The Unsinkable Molly Brown never flounders, and always keep the sonic platinum in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."
