STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN... One of the city’s landmark venues, Stockholm’s famed Globe Arena has been home to world class concerts, sports and special events since opening its doors in 1989. Recently, it was determined that the esteemed sphere was due for a complete audio makeover, to bring it in step with the new millennium.

The original hard-wired analog system, built around more than 100 MX1500 amplifiers from QSC Audio, is still going strong after some 15-plus years. Nonetheless, the venue’s owners expressed a desire to move to a networked, distributed system to achieve better control and more flexibility. Stockholm’s own DM Audio, the company responsible for the original system, were again awarded the contract for the system redesign.

The new system is comprised of 19 of QSC’s PL 236 amplifiers, linked via six of the company’s BASIS 922az units. The QSControl.net system handles all control, monitoring and signal processing needs over an Ethernet-based network.

A single BASIS 922az, stationed in the Globe’s control room, acts as the main signal distribution, input mixer and matrix for the system. The additional BASIS 922az units are situated in the amplifier rack, located in the central speaker cluster, and are all managed by a single remote computer. “This gives us better control of the different sections of the arena,” explains DM Audio’s Lars Wern. “We can now use the BASIS 922az units to equalize the different sections independently. We can also make use of the BASIS’ exclusive power limiting functions to prevent overload and get the best possible performance from the amplifiers.” The QSControl.net system is also being used to govern the existing speaker delay system, courtesy of QSC’s CM16a Amplifier Network Monitor.

The virtual control panels were designed by DM Audio representatives Jan Petersson, Barney Gausdal, Peter Ring and Lars Wern, working together with the Globe’s technical managers. Additional invaluable assistance was provided by QSC’s QSControl Specialist Fred Thomke, and Installed Sound Manager Scott Kalarchik.
