TOURING SOUND PUTS DOWN ROOTS
QSC ISIS WideLine rig finds a permanent home at Mohegan Sun Resort/Casino

UNCASVILLE, CT... First opened by Connecticut's Mohegan Tribe in 1996, the Mohegan Sun Resort/Casino pays homage to Native American traditions and culture with an architecture rich in handmade objects, furniture crafted by Indian artisans, and the extensive use of timber, water, and other natural objects. Centrally located minutes off of Interstate 95 between New York, Boston, Hartford, and Providence, the sprawling destination has also become the site of a newly-installed ISIS WideLine system. Incorporating a dozen WideLine loudspeaker enclosures from QSC, the wide-angle, line array rig is the stellar sound reinforcement attraction in the Wolf’s Den, the Mohegan Sun’s premier performance venue.

A collaborative design implemented under the watchful eyes of Mohegan Sun Lead Audio Engineer Eugene “Gino” Mulcahy and Jeff Mele, President of Waterbury, CT-based North American Theatrics Ltd., the Wolf’s Den audio system was built to accommodate the wide-ranging needs of the room. “Everyone from Alice Cooper and the Blues Brothers to Cheap Trick and Chick Corea play this place,” Mulcahy says, underscoring the diversity of musical guests that roll in-and-out of the venue’s loading dock. “That’s why one of our main objectives with QSC’s WideLine boxes was to supply serious sound that is so good visiting acts can feel free to leave their own systems on the truck. If anything, this system is effectively a full-tilt touring rig come home to roost.”

As purchased from North American Theatrics, the Wolf’s Den system is fueled by four of QSC’s PowerLight PL6.0II, two PL224, and a pair of PL9.0 amplifiers. Two BASIS 922az units (newcomer network audio systems from QSC that integrate the best of the company’s signal transport, control, processing, and monitoring technologies) serve as key front-end components.

“On its most fundamental level, this rig was chosen simply because it was the right tool for the job,” Mulcahy admits. “In terms of coverage, weight, and performance, what we bought was a turnkey system that is QSC from the amps and processing right on through to the loudspeakers. As envisioned, no visiting act has brought their own sound into this room yet. The WideLine boxes have performed beyond everyone’s expectations—they sound like nearfields. Our goals may have sounded crazy to some in the beginning, but thanks to North American and QSC, our madness quickly became reality.”

Built expressly for ballrooms, theatres, nightclubs, concert halls, and houses of worship, QSC’s WideLine components are attracting attention based upon their natural sounding 140° horizontal coverage; the widest of any line array currently offered. Like all other ISIS components, WideLine products are manufactured with an emphasis on clarity, reliability, quick setup, and no-hassle labor requirements.
