SALINA, KS
In many ways, the restoration of the Stiefel Theatre of the Performing Arts could be considered a small miracle. Opened in downtown Salina, KS as the Fox Theatre in 1931, the grand old movie palace welcomed generations of filmgoers before slowly sliding into a general state of disrepair which some thought would ultimately call for a final date with the wrecking ball.

Saved in the nick of time, however, with the aid of generous contributions and the skilled help of the International Fine Arts Conservation Studio (IFACS), the venerable venue arose from its own reconstruction dust last spring with a new lease on life. Now the home of the Salina Symphony, the Stiefel also plays host to a number of other local acts and national theatrical productions, and is as ornate and luxurious as it ever was new. Not to be forgotten in the renovation, house audio has been enhanced with the latest components technology has to offer, among which are eight ISA Series amplifiers from QSC.

Bringing new sound to the room was a task entrusted to Lawrence, KS-based MSM Systems. Given the nature of the meticulous period-authentic restoration, the sound system components had to blend invisibly with the natural decor as much as possible, while projecting smooth, even coverage over 1,300 seats. Based around a 4-way, tri-amped loudspeaker design, the rig features DSP processing and a wireless input scheme.

Housed in a single rack in the main equipment room, the ISA Series amplifiers supporting the system include four ISA 750s and four ISA 450s. "In and of itself, the Stiefel is nice sounding acoustically," notes MSM's Kent Clasen. "The house audio system complements the environment with a very rich and full sound of its own. Offering us the same QSC quality as found in the company's CX Series amplifiers, the ISA amps provide clean, transparent power for the 4-way rig at a great price. Value doesn't have to mean 'cheap', and every ISA component is working proof of just that."

Designated by the White House as part of the Save America's Treasures program, the Stiefel Theatre is one of only 10 theatres in the country to receive this designation. Also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the theatre cost $2.86 million to renovate, $500,000 of which was personally contributed by Milton Stiefel, a local businessman with family links to downtown Salina going back to 1904.
