ORLANDO, FL
Costing $748 million and adding some 3.2 million square feet of meeting and exhibition space, the nearly completed Orange County Convention Center expansion project will provide Central Florida with the second largest facility of its kind in the US. Located on 230 acres across International Drive from the existing convention center site, the new complex is slated for a September opening utilizing CX Series amplification and a QSControl (pronounced Qs Control) network audio system supplied by QSC Audio Products, Inc.
Designed by Austin, Texas-based Boner Associates, audio within the cavernous structure was implemented by Panasonic Corporate Systems Company, the system development unit of Panasonic System Sales Company USA. With a total of 1,064 R.5 Community loudspeakers bringing sound reinforcement to the OCCC's new one million square-ft. exhibition hall, an army of both CX1202V and CX204V amplifiers resides in the house equipment racks, all of which are controlled and monitored with the help of QSControl.
"Beyond basic control and monitoring functions, QSControl is really responsible for helping to maintain the general health and welfare of the entire system," notes Martin Collins, Panasonic's technical director on the job. "The technology is part of the intelligent equipment and digital audio techniques tying everything together. Without it, keeping this system in optimum shape would be a monstrousif not nearly impossibleproposition."
The expansion project will be linked to the existing convention center in both audio and human terms, with the latter being provided with a 1,500-ft. covered walkway facilitating travel back and forth. Funded with tourism and resort taxes, not local tax dollars, the project promises to be a boon to a facility which already pumps $1 billion annually into the Orlando economy, and supports more than 35,000 jobs.
