DIGITAL CINEMA COMPONENTS FROM QSC CHOSEN FOR NEW REGAL ENTERTAINMENT GROUP THEATRE

LAKEWOOD, CO… Colorado Mills, a new $250 million shopping complex located about 10 miles from downtown Denver, has been described as the "Disneyland of outlet malls" because of its theme park-like bright lights, music, food, and entertainment opportunities. In the latter category, the new Regal Entertainment Group theatre found on the property is a showcase of modern cinema featuring surround sound audio utilizing digital cinema components from QSC.
With seating for 870, this latest addition to the Regal Theatre chain was implemented under the guidance of John Durliat, director of quality assurance for the Knoxville, Tennessee-based company's technical services division. A cinema veteran who took a job as a projectionist at an Ohio drive-in theatre in high school and is now the technical designer of some of the nation's most state-of-the-art theatre systems, Durliat found himself faced with a somewhat unusual task when he took on the Colorado Mills project.
"One of the unique aspects of this application is that we share the room with the Walden Family Playhouse, a theatre group," he relates. "As a result, the audio end of our system was developed so that it can be used for live performance too."
Working to that end, Durliat and the Regal installation team tapped powers within the system's Dolby CP-650 processor, which now enables operators to quickly reconfigure the theatre rig from cinema to live performance with the simple press of a button.
Comprising three screen channels, over 20 surround loudspeakers, and a collection of seat-shaking subwoofers, the multipurpose system is powered by amplifiers from QSC's DCA Series. Offered with onboard power ranging from 215 to 1700 watts per channel, every DCA Series component occupies only two rackspaces and weighs-in at 21 pounds each.
"At Regal, we're always very cautious when it comes to new technologies," Durliat admits. "But over the last two years, the DCA amps have proven themselves to the point where we've adopted them for all our projects. QSC really did their homework when it came to developing the DCA power supply. The output signal level of these amps is always flawless: There are no switching artifacts, no harmonics, just pure sound. We've been just amazed. I'm basically grounded in the brute force era of amplification, so I was pessimistic of something like the DCA at first, but not anymore. This technology is definitely the wave of the future."
Further audio power behind the pictures at the Colorado Mills Regal Theatre comes from a DCM digital cinema monitor also provided by QSC. An integrated system providing both monitoring and signal processing functions, the DCM was used in this application to bring proper time alignment to all the loudspeaker elements.
"With the DCM in place, the sound in the room is exceptionally smooth," Durliat notes. "Everyone has enjoyed it. Even my technicians were impressed, and they are probably the harshest critics any theatre could have."
The largest motion picture exhibitor in the world, the Regal Entertainment Group comprises Regal Cinemas, United Artists, and Edwards Theatres. Over 5,800 screens are operated by the company in 36 states.
