LOS ANGELES, CA
Among all the sight, sound, and spectacle that filled the life of Aimee Semple McPherson, perhaps the biggest monument to the lasting power of her work as an evangelist is the Angelus Temple, a domed house of worship which rests on the edge of Echo Park in downtown Los Angeles. Built in 1923 for the unfathomable sum of $1.5 million, the landmark-status building is still the home of McPherson's International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, which recently joined forces with another L.A. ministry, The Dream Center, to expand its outreach. Along with news of the collaboration, temple administrators revealed plans to complete an extensive renovation, which, among other things, brings new audio to the structure's main sanctuary powered by amplifiers supplied by QSC Audio Products, Inc.
Designed by Westlake Village, CA-based McKay Conant Brook Inc. (MCB), the temple's sonic blueprint was implemented by AMT Systems Inc. of Santa Clarita, CA. As in McPherson's day (when it was common to see her thunder down the main aisle to the pulpit on a motorcycle, and a full-tilt brass band led the congregation in Jazz-Age praise), 21st century services held in the room are high-energy affairs where 20 or more performers regularly take the stage. SPLs hover at concert levels, with musical program material coming from a totally-stoked band including a full drum kit, electric guitar, bass, and a mixed bag of electronica.
Outfitted with line array loudspeakers from L-ACOUSTICS employing technology developed for the touring sound market, the house audio rig is powered by amplifiers from QSC that are custom-made for the application with 32 dB steps. In total, 10 model PL2.4MBs, six PL4.0s, two PL6.0PFCs, and four PL1.8 models from QSC's PowerLight Series of amplifiers were built. Capable of producing a total of 91,800 watts, the amplifiers feature QSC's PowerWave circuitry, a power supply technology developed expressly to provide startling performance and reliability in an extremely lightweight package. On a listening level, the amps deliver tight, seismically-proportioned bass, strong midrange vocals, and crystal-clear highs. Based around switching technology which packs serious audio punch by charging the supply rails at ultra-low levels of impedance 230,000 times per second, the amps never starve the incoming audio signal prematurely, thereby delivering crisp, clean sound, time-after-time.
According to Tim Carlson of AMT Systems, "QSC rep Mike Klickstein of Western Audio helped us fill this custom order. L-ACOUSTICS has presets they design for whatever processing you choose. For the Angelus Temple, loudspeaker blocks were delivered that each have their own crossover settings, EQ, limiting, and that sort of thing, all of which was made compatible for amplifiers with 32 dB steps. QSC responded immediately to our request to custom-build the amps we needed to match these specs; our demands didn't slow this fast-track project down one bit. The choice to go with QSC was a good one, not only because we use the equipment all the time and have a great relationship with the company, but because it's priced right, sounds good, and doesn't fail."
A renovated Angelus Temple made its public debut with its new sound system on July 14th. Music Director David Hanley lead Dream House, the house band, in performing praise-filled harmonies for an expected capacity crowd, which numbered approximately 3,065 in the room's main floor sections and two balconies.
