ST CHARLES, MO… Among floating gaming operations, the Ameristar Casino St. Charles is the Queen Mary of riverboat gambling. Offering 50,000 square feet of casino action rising two stories above the Mississippi River aboard twin vessels, the riparian facility offers 1,850 slot machines (including video and traditional reels), 400 video poker games, 39 gaming tables, and a second-floor live poker room. If that's not enough to keep you occupied, step onto the land-based section of the property and you'll be able to find a separate complex which will eventually house a blues club, sports bar, restaurants, retail shopping, and a hotel tower.

"Compared to what we were seeing a decade ago, this is a pretty large undertaking, especially for a riverboat casino," says Pro Sound Las Vegas President Larry Spurgeon. "Right now, we're experiencing a lot of changes in the way riverboat and Indian casinos are being built, and the Ameristar Casino St. Charles exemplifies these changes. It really is a floating version of Vegas."

Based upon the evidence, Spurgeon's opinion on this topic should not be taken lightly. An established Industry Wise Man who spent years working his own brand of systems integration magic at Mirage Resorts properties such as the Bellagio, he occupies his professional hours these days fulfilling his role as president of Pro Sound Inc.'s West Coast operations, which include the firm's offices in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

As those responsible for bringing traditional music and paging systems to the Ameristar St. Charles Casino, as well as a full-range rig to the facility's land-loving blues club, Pro Sound was given a PMK design penned by Joe Booher to follow as a road map to the job's successful completion. Guided by project manager Paul Turner using engineering drawings created by Pro Sound's Scott Marcellus and Jeremy Barndt, the project relies upon QSC power throughout in the form of 94 CX Series amplifiers and a pair of PowerLight 4.0s. Among the CX Series products are eight CX1202Vs, 28 CX302Vs, 43 CX602Vs, and 15 CX702s. As a controlling element used for monitoring and troubleshooting amplifier activity, QSC's QSControl network audio system was also added to the blueprint.

"Versatile and flexible powers of control and monitoring are critical in an application like this," Spurgeon believes. "Especially when you consider that the amps are located aboard two different riverboats, in a main amp room, blues club, and sports bar. QSControl enabled us to oversee and troubleshoot the entire system from a single location. Without it, it would be next to impossible for a single operator to sort things out."

Bearing the distinction of being Missouri's first riverboat gaming facility, the Ameristar Casino St. Charles plans to open to the public this July. Situated just north of the Interstate 70 bridge in St. Charles on approximately 52 acres, it is expected to draw customers from the Greater St. Louis area as well as outside the region.
