UNCASVILLE, CT… Centrally located between New York, Boston, Hartford, and Providence, the Mohegan Sun Resort/Casino pays homage to Native American traditions and culture with an architecture rich in handmade objects, furniture crafted by Indian artisans, and the extensive use of timber, water, and other natural objects. The sprawling destination is also the site of an ambitious expansion project which brings new casino space to the property, along with a 37-story hotel tower, 100,000+ square-foot convention center, 10,000 seat arena, and a 300-seat cabaret—with QSC power amplification and signal transport systems at the heart of it all.

AV systems integration for the undertaking was managed by North American Theatrics Ltd. An Oxford, Connecticut-based firm, North American built upon conceptual ideas provided by Peter Stern of New York's Shen Milsom & Wilke while collaborating with Mohegan Sun Chief Audio Engineer Gino Mulcahy and Supervisor of Event Production Frank Pavlich to complete designs for the resort/casino's new wide-ranging audio systems.

Audio power throughout the Mohegan Sun expansion project is provided by a sizable array of QSC products, including over 50 CX Series amplifiers (models CX1102, CX702, CX502, CX302, CX1202V, and CX302V) and 20 models from the PowerLight line including PL3.8 and PL6.0 units. "The decision to go with QSC was based largely upon reliability, flexibility, and weight," said Jeffrey Mele, president of North American. "Of these three factors, the space-saving characteristics of the CX line—all of which are only two rackspaces high and 14 inches deep—reduced rack costs and saved floor space. But probably even a bigger boon for us in this application was the weight-savings we gained."

"Since each of the CX models tips the scales at only 21 pounds, it was significantly easier to load standard off-the-shelf racks back at our shop and then transport them to the project site," noted Mele. "Once at Mohegan Sun, we hoisted many of the racks into airborne locations. Trust me, anyone who has done this would much rather have a rack that weighs 400 pounds dangling at the end of a chain motor as opposed to one which weighs 1,000 pounds. The safety margins are obviously greater with the slimmer configuration, and the inherent structural integrity of the rack structure isn't as likely to suffer either."

Arena activity at Mohegan Sun ranges from concerts to prominent sporting endeavors. The 10,000 seat room is also commonly used for special NBA events, national women's basketball, and lacrosse. As an aid to meeting broadcast needs within this and other Mohegan Sun environments, a QSC RAVE signal transport network is in the process of being completed. RAVE, an acronym for Routing Audio Via Ethernet, is a digital audio transport system that dramatically simplifies installation, increases routing flexibility, and improves audio performance. With RAVE, audio can be transmitted via standard Ethernet hardware and cabling using Peak Audio's CobraNet™ technology.

"When we're done with the RAVE network, we'll be bouncing over 200 channels of full bandwidth audio around," Mele adds. "Beyond linking all the various rooms here at Mohegan Sun for broadcast, if I have my druthers, we'll use it to change the infrastructure of the paging system. Paging is vital here; the property really depends upon it. Backing this need with full redundancy is imperative, and that's something which can be accomplished with RAVE quite easily."
