My MX-1500
|
Back in the mid eighties, when I was young and still dreamed of being a "Rock Star", I talked my new wife into letting me take out a loan to buy PA gear! I bought 2 of the biggest, baddest amps of the time, QSC's new MX-1500. They were kind of funny looking at the time (only two rack spaces when other amps were twice the size!).
The band I was in at that time practiced in the basement of a downtown store. One night, heavy rains came and the storm sewer backed up into the basement, leaving 2 feet of icky sewage and water all over, submerging my new amps! After finding out that insurance companies don't pay for sewage backup, I, in desperation, removed the covers on the amps and literally dumped them out on the flooded floor.
Over the next few days, I had box fans blowing as I anxiously waited, wondering if my amps would ever work again. I finally plugged them in after several beers, (liquid courage) and to my amazement, they both worked perfectly! And they have ever since!
Over the years there have been many, many testaments to QSC's durability. Prior to discovering that amps probably should be mounted in a rack, they routinely bounced around the back of the school bus that was converted into our "Rock Star Tour Bus!" No matter how carefully the bass player drove, they never seemed to be in the same place that they were loaded. All that ever happened was the rack ears got bent.
I eventually decided to build a rack for my "Babies". After a show one night, the driver of our "U-Haul" noticed that somebody was flashing their headlights at us. We stopped and found out that our "Loser Drummer" forgot to close the door! We backtracked about a mile, picking up mic stands and lights along the way. The rack was destroyed, but my amps still worked the next night.
Over the years, my QSC's bailed out almost all of the local bands in my area when one of their "Shiny, New Amps" let them down. All have commented on the "Character Marks" and listened in amazement as I proceeded to tell them what my babies have been through.
After reuniting with the keyboard player from my original band when I first got them (Sewage Incident), he told me about this website and promptly borrowed one of them (his fancy 2 year old amp of another manufacturer quit working on him GO FIGURE!). After debating which new amp he should buy, I talked him into buying an RMX-2450, which ironicaly, cost less than my MX-1500 did new.
These amps have never let me down! Every year or so, I take the covers off and blow the dusty mess that accumulates off the fan and other components. I still have the same wife after all these years! I guess when you find a good one that can survive the years, and still be with you, You got to keep 'em (The wife too). Hopefully this Spring, she'll let me at least upgrade my amps (she doesn't need upgrading!). My 14 year old son has now entered his route to "Rock Stardom". Hopefully, my OSC's as he calls them, will be as good to him as they were to me.

Great story on a cool product. Congrats on the prize! (I don't believe the part about the bass player being at fault though, more likely a prima donna lead guitarist wannabe drummer) but hey, really cool story...

Congrats on winning your prize, #1. now for the flipside. You are absolutely correct in saying that all you damaged is the ears. I have a pair of the 1400's and all they show, for what they have been through is a few scratches and a couple of bent ears. I can't say that I have the same wife, but the one I got is an oldie but goodie! I really don't know how old they are since I bought mine used. But to let everyone know, my son has been using them for all his bigger jobs and they work the same as when I bought them before all the battles that they went through.

I believe the bass players driving problems, (I've experienced similar) but I know what that one guy means about the lead guitar player wanna be drummer type. Jeeze!
